Super Eagles star and Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman has expressed pride in being the sole African footballer representing the continent at the esteemed Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris on Monday, October 28.
The 27-year-old made history by becoming the first player to score a hat-trick in a European final since 1975, securing Atalanta’s first-ever Europa League title against Bayer Leverkusen. Lookman is the only African player to make this year’s Ballon d’Or shortlist.
Reflecting on this achievement, Lookman told BBC Sport Africa, “Being on the list is special, and being the only African makes it even more meaningful. This year, we’ve achieved remarkable things for both club and country, and being recognized is a huge honor.”
Lookman recounted the historic Europa League hat-trick, saying, “That night was unforgettable. Beating a team like Leverkusen, who were unstoppable that season, was incredible. These are the moments players dream of.”
He further shared, “Stepping out of my comfort zone has its challenges, but I embrace the journey of growth – not just as a player, but also personally.”
Lookman’s stellar performances have also positioned him as a top contender for the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award, where he’s set to compete against nine others, including fellow Nigerian William Troost-Ekong.
